Installing your peel-and-stick mural is a fun and rewarding process, but preparation is key. Please take a few moments to read this step-by-step guide before you begin. It will walk you through the tools you need, how to prep your wall, and how to install your mural like a pro. If anything feels unclear, don’t hesitate to contact our customer service team.
Tools You’ll Need
To achieve the best results, we recommend gathering the following tools before you begin:
- Sharp utility knife (Stanley/craft knife)
- Plastic squeegee with a felt edge (or a straight edge wrapped in soft cloth)
- Tape measure
- Microfibre cloth
- Pencil
- Plumb line or spirit level
- Straight edge or metal ruler
Wall Preparation
A clean and smooth surface is essential for long-lasting adhesion. Please follow these preparation steps carefully:
- Remove all nails, screws, and wall décor. Fill any holes or cracks and sand smooth.
- Turn off power and remove switch plates or socket covers.
- Wash the walls using warm water and mild soap to remove any dust, grease, or residue. Rinse well and let dry for at least 24 hours.
- If your wall color is significantly darker than your wallpaper design, consider painting it a light, neutral tone to prevent show-through.
- Let the wallpaper acclimate in the installation room for 24 hours before hanging. Take it out of the packaging and unroll it slightly. This helps reduce curling and matches the temperature and humidity of the room.
Special notes on surfaces:
- Fresh paint: Allow at least 4 weeks before applying wallpaper. Check your paint brand’s instructions. If the paint has a “washable” or slick finish, apply a PVA-based primer first and let it fully dry.
- Lining paper: Peel-and-stick wallpaper can be installed over it, but this may reduce removability.
- Porous surfaces (e.g., plaster or cement): Ensure surfaces are dry and primed with PVA or emulsion paint. Wait 4 weeks after painting before installing.
- Non-porous surfaces (e.g., glass, glossy paint): Just clean thoroughly, no primer required.
Top tips for success:
- Handle panels gently. Peel-and-stick wallpaper can stretch if pulled too firmly.
- Avoid letting the adhesive side fold onto itself, as it may stick and reduce adhesion. If this happens, gently separate without pulling.
- Always use a razor-sharp blade for trimming. Dull blades can tear the material. Change your blade every 2 meters / 8 feet.
- Allow the panels to lie flat for minimum 24 hours before installing to minimize curling.
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Lay Out Your Mural
- Unroll the wallpaper and separate the panels (also called drops).
- Arrange them in order from left to right, following the numbers printed on the back of each panel (these are always at the top of each drop to help with orientation).
- If you ordered more than one mural, they may be packaged together, so double check panel sequences.
- Once laid out, check that the design aligns correctly across all panels. If anything looks off, do not proceed. Contact our support team before installation.
2. Hang the First Panel
- Use a plumb line or spirit level to draw a perfectly vertical line one panel’s width in from the left edge of your wall.
- Do not use the wall edge as a guide—it may not be straight, especially in older buildings.
- If obstacles like windows or doors prevent starting on the left, you may install from right to left using the same approach.
To apply:
- Peel about one-third of the backing paper off the first panel.
- Align the top-right corner with the vertical guide you just drew.
- Gently press the exposed adhesive to the wall and use your felt-edge squeegee or soft cloth to smooth outward and downward in diagonal strokes. Avoid creasing by using light, controlled pressure.
- If needed, you can carefully peel and reposition the panel without damaging it.
3. Continue Applying the Panel
- Slowly peel away the rest of the backing paper while smoothing as you go.
- Pay special attention to the edges to ensure they lie flat and adhere fully.
4. Add Additional Panels
Important: Our wallpaper uses a butt join, so there is no overlap between panels.
- Peel one-third of the backing paper from the second panel.
- Line up the design visually with the previous panel, edge to edge. The match should be seamless.
- Once aligned, press the panel down gently, then smooth it out using your squeegee or cloth.
- Continue peeling the backing and smoothing section by section until the panel is fully applied.
- Repeat the steps above for all remaining panels.
5. Finishing Touches
- Once the entire mural is in place, use a straight edge and sharp blade to carefully trim any excess at the top, bottom, and sides.
- Go over the full surface using your microfibre cloth to press out any lingering air bubbles and reinforce adhesion.
- Repeat this smoothing step again after one week to help the mural fully bond.
Drying and Post-Installation Tips
- Allow the mural to dry at room temperature with good ventilation.
- If there’s a radiator or heat source on the wall, turn it off or down for the first 24 hours to prevent shrinkage.
- A light odor may be noticeable at first—this is normal and will disappear within a few days.
That's it! Step back, admire your new wall, and enjoy your freshly transformed space.
