How To Measure Your Ceiling

Wallpapering a ceiling can create a striking, immersive design effect, whether you’re aiming for subtle texture or bold statement style. For the best possible fit and pattern alignment, it’s important to measure your ceiling correctly. Follow the guide below to ensure accurate dimensions and a smooth ordering process.

1. Prepare the Room

Before you begin taking measurements, prepare the space to make the process easier and more accurate:

  • Remove any large furniture or shift it away from the measuring area.
  • Ensure that ladders or stools are stable and that you have a clear, unobstructed view of the full ceiling.
  • Have your tools ready: a steel measuring tape (preferably a long one), a notepad or phone for recording, and a second person to help, if possible.

This preparation not only speeds things up but also ensures your measurements reflect the true surface area without distortions.

2. Measure the Ceiling Surface

To determine how much wallpaper you need, measure the full length and full width of your ceiling from edge to edge. Use a tape measure and stretch it across the ceiling in straight lines, starting from one wall to the opposite side.

  • Length: Measure the longest distance across the ceiling.
  • Width: Measure the shortest distance across.

Important: Add an extra 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) to both your length and width. This installation margin provides a buffer to account for uneven walls, measurement inaccuracies, or ceiling angles that aren’t perfectly straight. Any excess will be trimmed during installation.

3. Enter the Measurements Correctly

This step is crucial—mistakes in how you enter your dimensions can affect the direction of the wallpaper pattern and the overall result.

When placing your order:

  • Always enter the longest measurement as the height
  • Enter the shorter measurement as the width

This ensures the wallpaper design is printed and oriented correctly in relation to the ceiling layout.

Example:

If your ceiling is:

  • 400 cm (157.5") long
  • 250 cm (98.4") wide

You should input:

  • Height: 400 cm (157.5")
  • Width: 250 cm (98.4")

If reversed, the wallpaper pattern will run across the 250 cm direction, which may cause it to look sideways or misaligned once installed.

4. Final Tips for a Seamless Look
  • To minimize visible seams and create a smooth, uninterrupted ceiling finish, providing accurate measurements is key.
  • Our wallpaper is printed in panels. When dimensions are entered correctly, the panels will be aligned to run in the desired direction, minimizing joins and ensuring the pattern flows evenly across the surface.
  • If your ceiling is irregularly shaped or includes beams or sloped areas, please reach out to our support team with a diagram or photo for custom guidance.
